The VCUarts GOlab

During my tenure as manager at the GOlab, I conducted extensive user and market research guide a data-driven redesign of the services offered at the GOlab. This tripled business for the GOlab over the period of three years.

I developed materials such as branding, a website, engaging social media, and tutorial videos. To make it more accessible to students and to further develop their printing knowledge, a volunteer program was additionally created to help provide more access to students who needed affordable, quality printing.

A combination of user research and market research was conducted to evaluate the best approach to developing services students wanted and would use. Observational study of service touch points, a user interview, and background research into the lab were done and the following goals were established: increasing accessibility of services, awareness of services, and knowledge of printing so students and other customers could feel comfortable with the offered services.

User Research

This website was developed to be an one-stop shop for knowledge of print production to enhance accessibility and provide the lab’s educational tools. The website provided our own resources as well as a database of information from other labs and industry experts to help students learn more about print production. Students as a result were more comfortable taking responsibility for their own production pursuits.

ACCESSIBILITY

Social Media

Interacting with students on a regular basis is important when running an on-campus print facility. In order to keep them up-to-date, several eye-catching social media images were made to accompany important announcements.

AWARENESS

Being able to consistently offer in-person demonstrations and workshops to 3,000 students on campus was difficult with a small staff. These tutorial videos were produced to help students step-by-step in the lab’s binding equipment to make the information easily available for everyone at their convenience. The videos allow students the freedom to learn on their own if they don't have time to wait for an demo appointment.
